Glastonbury Band News

The time's come to put a little substance behind the line up. So here you'll find new bands, rumours, justifications, and denials. As is traditional, latest first.

18th June

The NME Glastonbury Guide came out today, and though I haven't yet seen a copy, I'm told the lineup they've published is basically the same as Jo Miller's last month (see below). The two bands who have dropped out are Neil Young and Crazy Horse (Neil cut his finger), and James, who have decided their Lollapolooza committments come first.

If you haven't seen them yet, check out the basic information page for some ticket news, and the links page for some new sites to visit.

14th June

You can find details of the Guardian ticket competition mentioned below on the basic information page. (The cover of the festival guide still has a cow on it, but it's not sticking its tongue out anymore. Shame!) Also email links to people with tickets for sale.

Somebody emailed that Wednesday's NME said the Fun Lovin' Criminals wouldn't be playing. I can't find any mention of it. Anybody got any more details?

13th June

Michael Eavis was on Radio 1 today talking about security at the festival. There's going to be a triple fence around the whole area costing about £400,000, plus another million spent on other security, police, etc. If this all works, the local authority have said they will allow more tickets to be sold next year. He was followed by John Power from Cast who got into something of a tangle saying he didn't think people should jump the fence, even though he did once.

9th June

A couple of interesting emails today. Somebody who has contacts in the band's management says the Rolling Stones are definitely not playing. No real surprise there. And then from the "friend of a guy whose cousin is in the band" category comes fairly solid confirmation that The Verve will be playing, probably on Sunday. No doubt there's a bit of slack in the running order now Neil Young has pulled out.

6th June

Somebody emailed me to say : "The NME reported that Noel Gallagher will perform with the Chemical Brothers at Glastonbury, especially during the song Setting Sun, they went on to say that a possible accoustic set would follow, perhaps even the band is going to join, but it looks as if Noel Gallagher is definitely there!"

3rd June

Fluke won't be playing at the festival (but they are still going!). They've postponed their tour until September, and the only date they're playing this summer is at V97.

1st June

Apologies for the lack of updates recently. I'm trying to catch up at the moment. The fact that the organisers asked Jo to take the lineup off her site (see below) suggests it is correct, so I'll update the main listing with the confirmations and dates from that.

The Oasis rumour still won't die. Somebody else with a friend who is connected with the festival has emailed to say Oasis will definitely (maybe) be there.

31st May

It seems likely that Neil Young will be forced to pull out of the festival after cutting his finger while preparing a sandwich. While the finger should be healed by the end of June, so much of his European tour will be affected that it must cast doubt on the viability of coming over for a few dates. The curious thing is the injury apparently happened a couple of weeks ago, and there were already rumours Neil was in dispute with some European promoters over money. A convenient excuse to cancel and renegotiate? I leave you to judge.

You can read the Warner Brothers press release on the klutz here and the MTV report here.

26th May

In an Irish radio interview, David Bowie said he was touring the European festivals with The Chemical Brothers and Beck. Since both of them are playing Glastonbury, the chances of him popping in unannounced seem reasonable.

23rd May

Today's Guardian newspaper had a short guide to the summer's festivals, including Glastonbury. They're sponsoring this year's festival and producing the official festival guide, which you receive when you get there. It seems to be in the same format as their weekend TV/entertainment guide, and features a rather fetching cover picture of a cow sticking its tongue out. They also advise you to "look out for a chance to buy (otherwise sold-out) tickets on June 14". I'd buy the paper that day if you haven't already got a ticket.

21st May

The links to Jo's pages don't work today since she seems to have removed the pages. But that's what the Netscape cache is for. So try these. Pyramid stage lineup. NME stage lineup.

20th May

Jo Miller's site has the lineup for the two main stages, apparently taken from the official schedule. It certainly looks genuine. But why is Neil playing the NME Stage? Here's the Pyramid stage lineup and here's the NME stage lineup.

18th May

My Life Story have said they're playing the festival on Friday 27th.

I put some more stuff here about James a couple of days ago, but it seems to have disappeared. After Tim Booth's neck problems, they're making up for their US tour being cancelled by playing Lollapalooza. This means that they're pulling out of most of their European festival dates, but they are returning to play Glastonbury. Whether they're playing T In The Park depends on who you listen to, but it seems unlikely.

There's a rumour floating around that Offspring will be playing. If anybody knows for sure one way or the other, let me know.

I've received some distinctly weird information, regarding the clone of a dead rock star fronting his old band at the festival. I'm still debating whether to spread it any further.

16th May

Chris Hillman (no, not that one) of Magick Eye Records has emailed to say that Astralasia, one of the label's bands, are playing the Avalon Stage on Saturday 28th.

I don't want to turn this into an Oasis page (I don't have a lawyer), but I'll just mention that a second date supporting U2 in San Francisco has been added, and the Tibetan Freedom Concert is on June 7th, not July 7th as stated below.

14th May

A couple of new bands today. Jo Whiley confirmed on her show yesterday that Echo And The Bunnymen are playing on the Saturday, and Symposium have distributed a newsletter saying they are playing.

13th May

Pollstar have added some new bands and dates. Beck is playing on the Friday, one of three gigs in three different countries he's playing that weekend, and Daft Punk are playing the Dance Tent on the Sunday. The new names are Nicolette, Afro Celt Sound System, Perfume, and the United Future Organisation.

Pavement's record company, Domino Records, has announced the band are playing on Sunday 29th.

11th May

Island Records web site is denying categorically that Paul Weller is playing Glastonbury. He seems to be one of those people whose name gets on the list and never leaves, despite the lack of any evidence.

James have cancelled their US tour this month due to Tim Booth aggravating his long standing neck injury (hence the album title). They hope to be back on the road in early June so it shouldn't affect their Glastonbury appearance.

According to one of the fan web sites, Elvis Costello will be playing the festival, accompanied by Steve Nieve.

Recent Stuff

Bands who've been added recently: Dreadzone, Dubstar, Embrace, Audioweb, System 7.

Most of the band listings still seem to have Black Sabbath down to play, but this seems highly unlikely since they're playing the Ozz Fest with Ozzy Osbourne in the US on two of the three days of Glastonbury.

Old Stuff

The Oasis rumour has been expanded to Oasis and The Verve playing consecutive sets on Sunday, followed by a few songs together. Somebody has emailed to say this is untrue. However what is certain is that Oasis are supporting U2 in San Francisco on June 18th, and are releasing a single on July 7th, the same day Noel plays the Tibetan Freedom concert in New York. This activity makes their appearance at Glastonbury seem a little more believable.

A cryptic correspondent (yoda@jedi.org?) insists that Underworld will be playing. The band have been quoted saying they have no live plans, and are currently in the studio. Scott Warner, who runs the dirtylist mailing list to which the band contribute, has raised the question with them, but don't hold your breath for a sensible answer.

I've been told that Mick Jagger was on MTV saying The Rolling Stones would be at Glastonbury (maybe running a kebab stand?). Apparently it's always been Michael Eavis' wish to have The Rolling Stones appear at the festival and then he might stop holding it. Will this year be the last festival? More information on this also gladly received.
